Boating Safety
Boating is a passion for millions of people round the world. Many of them are fortunate enough to own a boat. Others just restrict their enjoyment by taking a boat-ride once in a while. Keeping this in mind, it is very important for the boat owners to keep an eye on boating safety. Many boating accidents occur every year where a lot of people lose their lives.
It is an unfortunate reality that most of these boating accidents can easily be prevented, if the boating safety norms are correctly followed. The most basic of all the boating safety norms is to have a proper maintenance schedule for the boat. Many boat owners fail to comply with this boating norm. The other boating safety norms require the boat owners to keep specific equipments onboard, for any emergency situation. The emergency equipments include first-aid box, life-boats, flares, lights, etc. Many boats, which are currently in use, do not fully comply with this norm either.
Many boat owners do not even employ well-trained staff in their boats, which leads to accidents and loss of life.
But there is a silver lining in the dark clouds. Recent statistics reveal that the number of boating accidents has actually reduced. With the reduction in boating accidents, the number of casualties has also decreased.
There has been almost 65% reduction in the number of casualties in boating accidents, in the last 25 years, in the USA alone.
The best way to further reduce the percentage of boating accidents is through education of the boat owners as well as the people who actually drive these boats. Most of the boating safety norms are just common-sense, which a person needs to follow, to ensure the safety of the people on board. For example, it is a very simple idea that a person must extinguish his cigarette before putting fuel in the boat. But many people ignore this, which results in big accidents and even deaths.
New laws make it mandatory for all boat owners and people related to the boats, to go through a boating safety course. It is expected that with this mandatory regulation, the number of accidents and casualties can be brought down by as much as 80%. Many of the boating insurance companies are offering discounts on the insurance policies, for those who have taken or are willing to take a boating safety course.
Such regulations will hopefully make the waters safer for the boats as well as the people inside the boat.
