The bobber is more important than you might think at first blush. Bob Coan has developed a specialized bobber to fish the Float & Fly. He calls it Bob?s Bobber. His construction details remain a closely held secret but basically he inserts a weight inside the Styrofoam of an ordinary round bobber.
The bobber and weight are calibrated so that the bobber remains upright - showing only red - when the jig is suspended below the bobber. The weight from the tiny jig holds it in If the weight of the jig is lifted from the bobber ? by dragging bottom or if a fish should inhale it - the bobber will rotate and show white. This matters; many strikes come when the fish gently inhales the jig without moving it or pulling it under.
Bob?s Bobber is essential equipment if you expect to be successful fishing the Float & Fly.
