Elk Hunting
The elk is one of the most abundant species of the deer in the world. It is one of the largest mammals found in the eastern part of Asia as well as in the North America. Elk is often used as a game in these regions, due to its easy availability. Elk hunting is a favorite sport especially in North America.
The elk hunting season is usually spread across the months of October and November. The season dates are divided according to the type of arms being used. There are many types of arms which are in use, for the purpose of elk hunting. This includes the bow and arrow, muzzleloaders and also modern firearms like pistols and high powered rifles.
High powered rifles are the most common weapons for elk hunting. More than 150,000 elks are hunted by the gun hunters alone, annually. These modern rifles have an extended range and come attached with night visions and target help mechanisms too.
Elk hunting with muzzleloaders have gained popularity in the recent years. Many of the states in the USA are offering special seasons for the muzzleloaders, which is generally after the rifle season is over and before the archery season. Muzzleloaders are very good weapons for elk hunting and are also cheaper than the modern rifles. But, the muzzleloaders are not always as accurate as the rifles; they have less range than the rifles.
Pistols are also used for elk hunting, as pistols are handy as well as deadly. Pistol elk hunting is gaining popularity as well, as it is relatively easy to both own and use a pistol, than the other elk hunting weapons.
Archery elk hunting is perhaps the most difficult as well as adventurous ways of elk hunting. To begin with, it is very difficult to learn the art of archery. Then, it is equally difficult to target a moving object, such as the elk. The elk runs very fast and can change directions in a flash. So, in order to be a successful archery elk hunter, a person needs to have an exemplary intuitive power as well as physical fitness. In this type of elk hunting, the archer needs to be as close as 30 yards of an elk.
The most important aspect in elk hunting is to understand the target animal itself. It is very important to understand how the animals behave and what will be their common reactions when they see or sense a hunter nearby.
Although elk hunting is very popular in the various states of USA, but fortunately, the population of the elk is also rapidly growing.
