Hard Gun Cases and Soft Gun Cases

You can fully protect your gun without spending a fortune. Gun cases come in both the hard and soft variety depending on what your needs are and level of protection. Every firearm from rifles, shotguns, pistols and more all need to be properly stored for transportation. Whether it is for home, the range or more extensive air travel, there are many types of cases to choose from.

Cases for home use or to transport your gun to the firing range will need to protect your gun from the trip. Soft cases or light weight hard cases are fine. If you are taking your gun on an airplane you will need a heavy duty hard gun case with proper padding inside, aluminum cases are best. Do not assume that every hard gun case is sufficient for air travel. They are not. You must make sure that the case can sufficiently hold the size and weight of the gun.

Soft gun cases come in a variety of materials. Fleece, canvas, nylon, and more. Some can accommodate only guns without scopes, with scopes or both. They usually have handles for ease of use. Many of the soft cases have extra padding inside to protect your gun. If it does not have padding it is just a gun sleeve and it is not sufficient protection for travel at any level. Soft cases usually use a zipper to secure the case closed. If your gun is too heavy for the case it will put strain on the zipper, make sure you know the weight the case can carry.

Hard gun cases are made up of various materials for the outer shell such as plastics and aluminum. Hard gun cases usually come with locking clip closures. Some molded plastics are thin and not very strong. Check on the proper weight limit for the case. Even if the case is thin and not very strong, it still may be the case for you if you are only transporting to and from the range or local area. The strong molded plastic cases usually come with the ability to be locked, but you must provide your own lock. Some come with a built in number lock. Some strong molded plastic cases are sufficient for air travel, check on the weight capacity. Aluminum exterior gun cases are usually the strongest and have superior impact absorption. They are the cases recommended for air travel. Inside the hard gun cases is foam padding of various sorts. The egg crate style foam interior padding is a good choice.

The gun case should be made of the proper material to hold the weight and size of your gun. Some gun cases can hold more than one gun which is very convenient. Most gun cases come with the ability to be locked, check on the locking ability of the case of your choice. Many gun cases come with extra storage for gun accessories. Whatever you gun, you will be able to find the proper case to fit it.
