Hunting
Hunting is one of the most ancient food gathering practices, involving pursuing and killing of the targeted animal. In modern terminology, the term hunting generally denotes the regulated capturing, trapping and killing of animals or birds. Hunting at present, is a means of recreation, trade as well as a food gathering practice. Hunting may also be involved with the elimination of vermin, for pest control reasons.
Hunting has a very long history and some accounts suggest that the history may well predate the rise of early man. It has been suggested by many archeologists, that the early man depended more on larger animals as their food source.
With the development of civilization, there was also development of agriculture and animal husbandry. But still, hunting retained an important place in the culture and occupation of man. After the development of agriculture, hunting was generally done to kill the animals which may have been attacking the cattle. Animals were also killed if it was seen that both the community and the group of animals were dependent on the same resources, such as water and food.
Hunting slowly moved from the place of being a subsistence activity, to a recreational and secondary activity. Hunting became an annual social event, where the whole village took part and the day was celebrated with drinks and cooked meat of the hunted animals. With this emerged another trend. The change in the practice of hunting led to an emergence of people, who were trained hunters. Hunting was their profession.
In the history of hunting, we also find that dogs have played a vital role, since the days of their domestication. Hunting dogs belong to a special breed of dogs, which are specialized for hunting purposes.
With the rise of the middle class, hunting became a full fledged recreational activity, with many people participating in it. Many people enjoy hunting just because they enjoy exploring the nature along with the adventure associated with it. Others enjoy hunting animals, rather than buying meat from the market.
There are various forms of hunting, depending upon the weapons used and the target to be hunted. For example, fishing is the hunting of fish and whaling is the name given to whale hunting.
There various types of equipments being used for hunting, starting from traps to false calls, from muzzleloaders to pistols, from rifles to bow and arrows. Even special vehicles are used to carry the equipments and the hunted animals. Hunting has evolved as quite a big industry all over the world.
