Hunting Using Animal Scents

Veteran hunters know that the way to attract an animal is through a scent. They must first eliminate any human odor and then use attractants to get their game. The latest wildlife research has shown that animals cannot resist the scents if placed at the right time of the season and at the right location. Whether you are hunting deer, bear, raccoons, elk or hogs, animal scents will help you get your game.

Start by eliminating your own human odor. There are a variety of odor eliminators and they need to be used on your hair, clothing, shoes and tree stand. Fox urine is another human odor eliminator it can cover your tracks when applied to the soles of your shoes or boots.

The best time to hunt deer is during the rut. The bucks are looking for the does, the does are looking for the bucks, its perfect. The antlers have hardened and the deer are ready for you. Plus if you try to hunt after the rut, most big buck have lost their antlers. The rut begins each season when the first doe goes into estrous. During this time the bucks can't think straight and make mistakes. It is up to the prepared hunter to take advantage of this time and use scents to lure their buck. Scents come in many different applications that can be used with a variety of applicators. Aerosols, sprays and powders are very popular. The scents are developed using the latest technology and collecting scents from the deer. They come in scents such as dominant buck, urine and doe in estrous. A hunter can season the ground using a drag system to attract the buck. They won't know what hit them. Hunters can learn from others by watching the pros use scents to attract both buck and does. Training videos help even the most veteran hunter with some new moves.

Bears can be attracted using a similar concept. They like a more sweet smelling attractor. An oil based attractor is best when trying to lure a bear. The oil scent lasts a long time and holds up even in rainy weather.

Hogs are attracted by scents also. Urine and sow in estrous can lure a hog and a little heat helps the attractant bring the hog to you. But, what the hogs really like is sweet food scents such as fruit punch, peanut butter and sweet corn. Hogs can't resist the smell of good food, give them what they want and you will get them.

Elk are also lured by urine based scents that are made using actual scents from the animal. Using doe urine or estrous scents usually get the best results. Elk operate in a similar manner to deer. Be prepared and lure them with the scent of a doe in estrous.

No matter what big game you are hunting, don't forget to plan ahead and use your scents. Eliminating your scent will help you out as well.
